Tic-Tac-Toe online: rules, strategy and game modes
Tic-tac-toe (called noughts and crosses in the UK and parts of the Commonwealth) is played on a 3×3 grid: players take turns marking a square and the first to get three in a row wins. On XXX you can play it online, free, with no sign-up against someone from anywhere, with a friend, or against the computer.
How to never lose
- If you go first, take a corner or the centre: they sit on the most winning lines.
- If your opponent opens in a corner, answer in the centre; if they open in the centre, take a corner.
- Always check whether your opponent has two in a row and block the third square.
- Look for a fork: a move that creates two threats at once, which can't both be blocked.
- With perfect play from both sides, the classic game is always a draw, which is why XXX adds deeper modes.
The four modes
- Classic: the 3×3 you know.
- Vanishing pieces: only three pieces each; placing a fourth removes your oldest. No draws, ever.
- Big board: 5×5, get four in a row.
- Ultimate: a game inside a game; where you play decides which board your opponent must play in.
